Homework Club
The after-school Homework Club focuses on meeting the educational needs of 10 –15 low-income children from the Beverly Community. The club meets three days a week for 1 ½ hours. Youth are supported with their homework through tutoring and peer support. Tutoring is available every day the club meets. Tutors consist of Staff, Interns, and Volunteers.
This after-school program provides mentoring and educational support to children at risk for academic failure living in the communities we serve. Students can be referred to the program by their parents or by the school they attend.
Register by submitting a permission slip signed by the participant's parent/guardian. This permission slip would allow Beverly Bootstraps Community Outreach Program Staff to speak with the Beverly Public Schools and allow participants to attend planned Field Trips.
For more information about the Homework Club please contact Youth Coordinator, Megan Kelley.

Program Key Elements & Guidelines
Daily Schedule
2:30 to 2:40 Settle in and eat a nutritious snack
2:40 to 3:40 Homework and Tutoring
3:40 to 4:00 Recreational or Enrichment Activity
Family Togetherness Nights
We are excited to introduce an evening for youth engaged in our programs to bring in their families for dinner and fun activities. These nights will focus on how youth are doing in the program, how to help youth achieve academic success and participate in a special activity.
Attendance Policy
Daily attendance to Homework Club is required unless extenuating circumstances have been previously discussed. If a child cannot make it to Homework Club because they are sick or have some other engagement, the parent or guardian must contact staff and let them know.
Behavior Policy:
Each child is allotted 3 behavior strikes. If a student breaks one of the Homework Club rules or guidelines s/he may be given a strike. Each strike will result in a call home. In addition, the first strike serves as a warning, the second requires the child speaking to Andrea Jones (Bootstraps’ Program Director), and the third strike means the child is only allowed to attend Homework Club once a week until behavior has improved.
Personal and Club Goals:
At the beginning of each year and again at the start of a new semester, each child will sit with a tutor and set 3 academic goals. These can range anywhere from not missing any homework assignments to getting an A in a class. We want to motivate kids and help them strive for even higher achievement. In addition, as a club, we will set group goals (i.e. each student receive one A on an assignment or test). As a group we will track our success and learn to work as a team and motivate our peers.
Enrichment Activities: Each Wednesday students will participate in an enrichment activity which will be an engaging activity that boosts core academic skills such as reading or math. This time will be used to enhance children’s creativity through puzzles, crafts, and games. This time will focus on building skills in critical thinking, listening, memory, visualization, and concentration.
Community Service: Once a month the Homework Club will have the chance to give back to the Beverly community. In place of recreation time, the children will all participate in a community service activity. This might include cleaning up a local park or helping in the Tom Gifford Food Pantry.
Sweet Peas Garden: In the months of April through October the students will have the opportunity to participate in the Homework Club’s gardening activity. Once a week they will have the chance to seed, plant, and water Beverly Bootstraps’ very own vegetable garden. They will work with a gardening expert to learn (in a hands-on way) how an organic vegetable garden thrives. They will have the opportunity to harvest and bring home some of the vegetables. The rest will be donated to the Tom Gifford Food Pantry.
Pick-a-Book: At the beginning of the year, each child (with the help of a tutor) will search our bookshelves and find a book that suits his or her reading level and that s/he finds interesting. Whenever the child is finished with homework or has no homework s/he can pick up the book and read. For each book the child completes, s/he will need to complete a short book report. At the end of the year, the student who has read the most number of books will receive a prize.
